Vines - Morning Meetings at Argadens

Every week, on Tuesday morning, I do a tour of the vineyard at Chateau Argadens. I visit each plot, looking at what condition the leaves and the bunches are in, hunting out insect larvae, checking on the vineyard team’s recent work (sucker removal, tying up..), how the vines have come on (what stage of phenolic ripeness they have reached, in particular) and, last but not least, having a good look at the state of the soil. My promenade gives me all the valuable information I need – along with the weather forecast, of course – to draw up the work plan for the coming week. That Tuesday morning, however, I took a roundabout route through a plot we call  ‘Palombière Merlot’. As I passed along a row of vines I was stopped in my tracks by the presence of two fawns who were happily hunting out the organic fertilizer that we had mixed into the soil a week earlier.

The white patches on their fur were still clearly visible and they can only have been about a month old. They stared at me, calm and motionless for several minutes, before they quietly turned and headed towards the wood.

A moment of contentment, pure and simple…
